How to Apply
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office for the Patrol Division, Detention Division, Civil Division, School Resource Officer, Court Division, or as a Civilian employee come by the office at 153 Public Safety Way and pick up an application for employment. These applications are located at the front desk in the main lobby of the building.

Qualifications to Apply
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. **Training and Standards require a high school equivalent diploma be at least partial classroom.
- Must possess or be able to possess a North Carolina driver’s license.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
- Must meet all the applicable standards and qualify for State Law Enforcement Certification in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Training & Standards Commission as well as the policies of the Office of the Sheriff of Transylvania County.
Here at the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office we have many different divisions in which one could make a career out of. We have a Patrol Division that patrols the entire county answering calls for service in all aspects of the job. Patrol makes traffic stops, serves warrants, transports prisoners, takes reports, all while answering calls for service. This division is also responsible for patrolling the community and dealing with the public on a daily basis.
The Detention Division takes care of the Detention Facility and all that comes with it. They manage up to 100 inmates at any given time both male and female. The Detention Division also takes in new inmates that have been arrested on any given day and does all the processing of new inmates such a booking paperwork and finger printing. The detention staff ensures that order and safety are a top priority within the confines of the facility.
The Civil Division here at the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for serving all civil papers such as domestic violence protective orders, subpoenas for court, evictions, and writ of executions on a daily basis. This division also takes care of firearms that may be required to be turned over during the domestic violence protective order procedure and they ensure the firearms are logged and stored in the proper manner.
The Court Division is responsible for the safety and security of the courthouse and all employees working there and the public that uses the court facility on a daily basis. The Court Division also makes sure that any judicial official is protected during any time at the courthouse. These officer open and close court on a daily basis and ensure that safety is a top priority for all persons at the court house.
The Investigations Division takes and follows up on all reports that are taken within the office. This division investigates crimes such as homicide, breaking and entering’s, vehicle theft, stolen property, assaults, and many other crimes. This division also works many crime scenes and will photograph and collect evidence as well a process the entire scene.
The School Resource Office Division covers eleven schools here in Transylvania County. These officers of this division are responsible for the safety and security of all schools located within Transylvania County. These officers also teach classes such as DARE, gun safety, and bus safety as well as dealing with custody issues that can and will arise on a daily basis. These officers of this division are role models for the students and are looked up too by the students of this county. These officer make a major impact on these students that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
The Narcotics Taskforce is a group of detectives from the Brevard Police Department and the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office that make major drug enforcement their primary issue within the county. These officers do gang enforcement as well as ABC enforcement throughout the county. These officers also participate in community projects such as Operation Medicine Drop and they also operate and manage the medication drop boxes located at the Police Department and at the Sheriff’s Office.;
The Special Response Team is a highly trained team that will execute high risk search warrants and high risk calls at any given time of the day. These officers come from all divisions here at the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office and are willing to put their lives on the line at any time. These officers will also do high risk searches in open wooded areas as well tracking for suspects on the loose. These officers get many hours of training a year and have to meet a physical standard established by their command staff every year.
